The Religion of Productivity

Welcome fellow worshiper to Productivity. Where you choose to worship is of course your own business – the Church of David Allen is very popular. The Mosque of Mann is growing more so since its scism from the latter. There are a number of fringe sects with their own virtues and idiosyncrasies. Which ever you choose you will feel the benefit – as long as you actually worship, rather than just tick the box on the census form…

Religions are good. They can give purpose and meaning. They can answer questions that defy other reasoning. And they give us something to do on a Sunday.

But they also provide somewhere you can get too wrapped up in – a system that leave you blinkered to all things new and all things different. Productivity is no different in this respect.

It is far too easy to spend your time trying to get as much stuff done as possible without ever questioning why it needs getting done in the first place. We have all done it – got to the end of a ‘very productive day’ yet feel as if you have achieved nothing.

There is also a mass of documentation and opinions, all of which consider themselves to be The Word in productivity. You may start as a believer but end up an extremest!

Worst of all you can become disaffected with the whole thing. Fed up with all the chatter. Confused by a million points of view.

Just remember. Like Religion, productivity is about making the world a bit happier – by world that might mean your day at the office as much as it means the universe itself. If what you are doing is not making you happier – then change it, and try another church!
